Both have been employed for the analysis of electrochemical noise in corrosion studies, and claims have been made concerning the superiority of one method with respect to the other. The fast Fourier transform and the maximum entropy method (MEM) provide algorithms for the estimation of the power spectral density (PSD) of fluctuations. The current guideline describes a simple procedure for the performance and evaluation of EN measurement equipment using dummy cells. For this purpose a guideline has been developed by the European Cooperative Group on Corrosion Monitoring of Nuclear Materials (ECG-COMON 1) as an outcome from round-robin testing on EN. Therefore, testing on well-defined dummy cells should always be a preliminary step to assess the baseline noise of the EN measurement equipment and to ensure data validity. A prerequisite for performing serious research on the EN measurement technique is a careful evaluation of the measuring system, even if commercially available EN measurement instruments are used. Currently, research work on the EN technique is carried out in several laboratories worldwide for different kind of industrial applications but also for the investigation of corrosion mechanisms. The electrochemical noise (EN) technique is an example of a promising method, especially for monitoring localised corrosion phenomena. A key element for a pro-active ageing management approach is to apply in situ corrosion monitoring. Pro-active ageing management is becoming more and more important for the economical and safe operation of industrial plants. The results were comparable to those obtained for the same set of experimental data using Origin® software. This routine was used to analyze experimental potential and current noise data recorded for chalcopyrite. This work presents a step-by-step procedure using Excel to perform these calculations, automating the process of obtaining the spectral electrochemical noise resistance. It is a useful tool for the analysis of EN data using fast Fourier transform (FFT), a process that is often made repeatedly and, if not automated, is quite laborious.

EN analysis (ENA) allows assessment of the type of corrosion and rapid determination of the corrosion rate. Electrochemical noise (EN) measurements are based on the fluctuations of the electrochemical potential and the current that occur during, for example, a corrosion process without an external signal perturbation.
